The Compton Genealogy and Links to Other Families

PREFATORY COMMENTS

BACKGROUND AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: This is a family personal history, concentrating on the descendants of William Fuller Compton, that largely centers in Pikeville, Kentucky, and various counties in Southwestern Virginia. Comptons are an ancient family reportedly descended from the Anglo-Saxon Alwyne of County Warwick England, and his son Turchil de Eardene, Earl of County Warwick, (the first to have a surname), who was favored by William the Conqueror, as a result of his failing to aid the losing King Harold. Turchil’s son Osbert was reportedly the first to use the surname Compton. The American history of this family is a history of the migration of immigrants from England from the Eastern seaboard, through the Virginia Appalachians and into Eastern Kentucky, among other branches (see Blalock, infra). Of course, it is part of a larger migration of Comptons and indeed of Early America itself. Apprehending this puts oneself into context and is thus a truly humbling experience. The information below is a compilation of a number of sources. The first major sources were distant cousin Jim Farrar of Minneapolis, and John Blair who were kind enough to start me with basic information, obtained from Audrey LaMothe of Prestonsburg, KY, of the tree prior to William Fuller Compton (Great-great grandad Billy). Jim has been concentrating issues of identity of William Fuller Compton’s parents, and also the early William Compton parentage issue described below. Jim has done some excellent basic work tracing the William of New York ancestry. Research was continued through the Compton Family Bible Family Register, compiled by Janene Compton Whitley, the Elizabeth Rose Ferrell family Bible, documents belonging to Roy Compton, Ellena Turner Compton, others, and also by information from a number of online Genweb and other researchers, including Susan Herron for the King Compton branch and other details. There is also quite a bit of clues/information on the Compton Genforum sponsored by Family Treemaker software (http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/compton), posing intriguing questions. Also, Ancestry.com is a useful site. There is also a Compton mailing list currently administered by Rootsweb, for which Clark Compton (CCCompto@aol.com) is an initial contact. I have also received invaluable information from Margureitte Ratliff, which potentially takes the line back an additional four generations beyond John I (see below.). This information was substantially supplemented by Delton Blalock’s 1984 genealogy British and American Comptons from the Colonial Era to the Modern Day in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas. This well-documented study corroborates others and shows most American Comptons descended from John Compton of kent County England/Massachusetts/New Jersey or William (Willieum) Compton of New York, who lived among the Dutch. Early matters are confused insofar as William had a son, William, who apparently migrated to Middlesex County, New Jersey. There is a difference in the authorities whether it was this William, or the William, son of John, and born in England who is the direct ancestor of the Richard Compton…William Fuller Compton line. The William who moved from New York, in any event, married Mary Bowne, whose sister is in Abraham Lincoln’s direct ancestral line. William was associated with the Bowne family, which reportedly left New York for New Jersey as a result of religious persecution (they were Baptists).

John Compton I, below, is likely one of three sons of Isselstynes (G -0) Compton [m. Aalthie (Orchie Blue) Blaaw ca. 1720]. John’s father is reportedly Richard (G –1) Compton [m. Prudence Isselstynes, b. Holland]. Richard was born Dec 1673 in NJ. He and Prudence had seven children, and Richard owned property in Hunterdon Co. NJ by 1710 and died about that time. Richard was son (one of ten children) of William (G –2) and Mary Bowne, m. Feb 1665 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ. This William was either in born 1631 in Kent Co., England, d. Sep 21, 1694 in Middlesex NJ, or the New York William cited above. Mary was born 1635, d. 1713. The New Jersey William in turn was son of John (G –3), who was born ca.1605 in Kent Co. England and married Susanna Freeman, b. ca. 1595. William was apparently the eldest being also born in England. There were two other sibs, Samuel and Abagail.

At such time as the issue with respect to William’s ancestry is further confirmed, the generations discussed in this note will be added to the tree and the generations renumbered, probably as this document gets converted into specialized software. There is some text with generation numbers footnoted; they are from the original and have not been renumbered (i.e., they are four different than the text generations, and assume the linkage described in this note).

There are also apparent early "clusters" in Alexandria, VA, Pennsylvania (Quakers). A Thomas Compton, b. ca. 1750-60 is mentioned as a Revolutionary war soldier who married a Margaret Greer; issue of the marriage were Cyrus, John Lee, Samuel and Margaret. One may speculate that Thomas appears to be John’s contemporary and perhaps a brother. Max Compton speculates there was a John Compton and two brothers who emigrated to America "at an early date", two going to MD and one to NC. There was another Compton, Henry, a Bishop of London, one of the founders and first Chanslor [sic, likely Chancellor, after the English Chancery courts] of William and Mary College, who may fit into an early equation. I freely admit much of the information in this document is based on hearsay and is subject to additional scrutiny and confirmation. There is conflicting information in this trail and "contra" notes are included at critical junctures. I do not own the truth but only my judgment about the weight of the evidence. It is my expectation to provide free circulation of this document as hypothesis, based upon my best judgment, and whatever confirmation I can develop. Therefore, please feel free to provide additional detail,

questions/issues and corrections as appropriate. By definition, the bias is from the perspective of the writer, but I have tried to provide appropriate emphasis to major branches of the extended tree and include them for the potential help and additional linkages they may provide to others. I mean no harm from my perspective, and apologize in advance for it.

NOTE: John conveyed Land to Frederick Cook in 1803 in Tazewell Co, VA.

He conveyed Land to Joshua Day in 1805 in Tazewell Co, VA.

Margureitte Ratliff’s research indicates John and Polly had eight children. This is particularly consistent with placing Leander under John’s lineage (instead of James). This is an issue subject to confirmation.
